The GUS Group in Cologne has successfully created more flexible options for the customer-specific adaptation of their GUS-OS service spectrum through the expansion of the SQL database with the help of XML. While until now customers have for example asked for database expansions to illustrate their stock list in projects which exceeded the standard and which therefore required a continuous consolidation of the database, with the help of XML extensions individual database expansions can now be carried out close to the standard and on an individual basis.
In accordance with this concept, necessary add-on files are stored in the XML string and integrated in the interface via a generated SQL view. It is not possible for the user to distinguish whether a standard data field of the SQL database is operated through the JSP interface of GUS-OS or whether an XML tag of the expansion is utilized. The customized solution thereby remains close to the standard and is release-ready without having to compromise on flexibility.
This "database expansion without database extension" also ensures the auditability of management data through drill downs. As part of a calculation (break-even analysis) for example, the XML string includes the analysis values as well as the evaluation data and the historic detail data. This ensures the legally required revision security. Moreover: On the basis of this XML data and with OSGrid, the XML string can be turned into a table illustration on the JSP surface. This is another case when the user cannot discern whether the analyzed data as well as the analysis results are located in the native SQL database or in the customized XML extension.
With their GUS OS service range, the GUS Group focuses on process industry requirements for the pharmaceutical, chemical, food, as well as logistics industry and provides a large bandwidth of enterprise solution for these segments - from ERP and CRM, accounting, quality management to document management and business intelligence. The flexible solution of "database expansion without database extension" with the help of XML is offered as part of all solutions within the GUS OS architecture. This does not only facilitate future customized expansions. It also significantly reduces subsequent expenses for release changes and maintenance as well as potential follow-up projects and respective extensions. "Standard plus XML" thus becomes a standardized architecture component of the GUS OS service spectrum.
